Best defenders

Football analysts and pundits have continued to glorify midfielders and strikers so much that sometimes we tend to forget that a team can’t be complete without defenders and goalkeepers. For a team to win any trophy every department has to be in great shape because after all it is a team effort that counts.

Today, we therefore take a closer look at a group of players that keep the ball away from their keepers for the entire period of the match. Central defenders are rarely celebrated in the modern game. The last defender to win the coveted Ballon d’Or was Italian Fabio Cannavaro in 2006 after helping his country win the World Cup in Germany.

This season we are lucky once again to have great centre halves in Europe best clubs and today we will sample them according to how they rank.

10. Giorgio Chiellini

9. Nicholas Otamendi

Argentine and Manchester City 28-year-old centre back Nicholas Otamendi has done well in the Premier League so far since his last season transfer from La Liga side Valencia. He will be important for Pep Guardiola team this season.

England and Manchester United 26-year-old defender Chris Smalling enjoyed the best season in his career under former manager Luis Van Gaal. He has recovered well from injury and he has reclaimed his place in the team. This will certainly be a big season for him.

7. Matts Hummel

Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich won the race to land Matt Hummels from Borussia Dortmund beating Premier League giants Manchester United who were linked with the defender for almost two seasons. You can only imagine how great his partnership with Jerome Boateng is going to be.

6. Diego Godin

Uruguay and Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin is simply a rock at the centre of defence. You are almost certain the striker is going to score if he can beat the big centre half. That is however very rare.
